Grzegorz Schetyna has already done so much damage to Polish politics that it would be very beneficial for Poland if he took up a private hobby that he had discovered in the coming years. To be sure, do not enter the space of deeper relationships of social life. I can imagine how beneficial it could be for him to grow roses, for example, on his grounds around the house. A well-deserved prize is the annual participation in local competitions of ornamental flower growers, which would give an opportunity to present their achievements. Unfortunately, such a vision, as I know Grzegorz Schetyna, is not realistic.
However, he could refrain from any outside political activity and limit himself to paying party dues regularly. And he certainly shouldn’t talk about things he has nothing interesting to say about. Besides, he’s wrong. That’s probably reason enough to keep quiet.
However, Grzegorz Schetyna still considers himself a sage – when speaking in public, he tries to maintain the demeanor and expression of an ancient thinker. Nor can he spare himself political analysis on the most important issues for Poland. This is the case with Poland’s attempts to obtain reparations from Germany for damage during World War II.
I remember when Poland submitted a memorandum to the German government on reparations in early October last year, Grzegorz Schetyna questioned the legitimacy of the company. In his opinion, the Polish government officially waived compensation for losses suffered in World War II in 1953.
This completely incomprehensible opinion of Grzegorz Schetyna is all the more surprising since the PO politician is a historian by training. He forgot that the declaration according to which Poland renounced all claims for losses incurred during the Second World War came from the government of the People’s Republic of Poland. Equally important, he made the statement to the German Democratic Republic, which is not recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany. Grzegorz Schetyna referred to the agreement made “under the protectorate” of the USSR by a non-sovereign state with another non-sovereign state. And such a settlement Grzegorz Schetyna was ready to consider valid today!
After several months, in the face of unequivocal opinions of experts who rejected Grzegorz Schetyna’s position, the politician abandoned the previous arguments and undermined attempts to obtain reparations by other means. According to him, the issue of reparations has been used by PiS to “make policy” since its inception. The government has no clear idea how to effectively begin to return to the subject of compensation. At the same time, he warns to be careful not to alienate the German government from Poland. We have to think realistically about details. Do not forget that Polish companies live off the German market and do not lose this important economic partner – he instructs. And another enlightened advice from Grzegorz Schetyna, which practically paralyzes the Polish demands:
You can’t build politics on resentment.
In other words, Grzegorz Schetyna wants to forget the past as if it had no influence on the current state of Poland.
Grzegorz Schetyna never ends his “substantive” arguments without emphasizing the hidden truth he exposes – “It is Kaczyński’s cynical game” – he lays bare the essence of the reparations initiative.
