The United States and Japan can discuss the distribution of use of bases, ports and other defense facilities in peacetime in a 2 + 2 format. The Nikkei newspaper writes about it, citing sources.
According to the publication, high-level representatives of the two countries are expected to meet next month. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada will meet with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on January 11 in Washington.
It was stated that the parties plan to discuss the use of facilities located on Japanese soil. Representatives of the two countries will also discuss the plan in case of an enemy attack on Japan, explaining the procedure before Tokyo can exercise its right to counterattack.
