Generalitat President Ximo Puig announced. Consell’s general assembly to extend regional rate cutss, with the aim of helping citizens and protecting families in the context of current inflation. This was voiced at the Christmas toast to the media at the Casa de las Brujas in Alicante this Tuesday, where he himself showed his full support for the latest package of measures approved by the central government.
Puig announced that the extension will go into effect at Consell’s plenary next Friday, in accordance with measures implemented by the National Executive. In his words, “All the policies implemented by both the Generalitat and the Spanish Government are aligned so that no one is deprived of their rights from this crisis. And therefore we will extend the rate cut, to protect families and, above all, those who suffer more».
The goal Consell had set for himself was “to do everything in his power to contain inflation,” he continued. Therefore, it is very important to reduce prices.” He reminded that all rates of Generalitat had already decreased by 10 percent at that time and this trend would continue.
Puig also showed his full support for the latest package of measures approved by the Government to deal with the rise in prices, including VAT reduction on essential foods and free public transport. Regarding this last issue, the Consell chairman stated that this is a basic line and that Generalitat will do its part to reduce public transport. It also reminded that currently free entry for under 31s is in effect until at least July 31st. “This is a way to help people and families with less economic capacity at such a difficult time with inflation still too high for the normal development of the economy.”
confiscation
Puig also avoided criticism from the PP in the sense that lowering VAT on food was a popular proposal that the PSOE copied late and badly. For the head of the Generalitat, what the main opposition party was actually proposing was “a kind of financial confiscation that has been a huge failure in other countries.”
Supermarkets guarantee automatic VAT reduction
Supermarkets guarantee that the VAT reduction on certain foods approved by the central government will be applied automatically on January 1, with the same price reduction without exception. That was the commitment made yesterday by Pedro Reig, manager of Asucova (the Valencian employers’ association, which includes Mercadona, Consum, Lidl or Masymas, among other major chains) and assured that the measure was “generally positive”. “It could have been more ambitious.” Juana Vazquez
