“In Poland, we knew that Ukrainians are determined to defend their independence and that Russia will not be easy,” PiS MP Michał Jach, chairman of the parliamentary National Defense Commission, told the wPolityce.pl portal.

“The Russians lied to themselves”
While it is clear that the authorities of Ukraine’s allies knew that Russia would attack, PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński pointed out that “certain analysis has long suggested that actions indicating Ukraine would be the target of aggression, the so-called maskivka, and the real direction of attack was to the north.”
We asked PiS MP Michał Jach for a response to this.
The authorities involved already knew in the spring of last year that Russia was preparing for war: concentrating troops, increasing preparedness, simply preparing for aggression. And since it seemed that it was preparing to attack Ukraine, it seemed such a provocation to us. In Poland we knew that the Ukrainians are determined to defend their independence and that Russia will not be easy
– emphasizes the interlocutor of wPolityce.pl.
I think – although this is only my opinion – that the Russians lied to themselves, talking about the lack of preparedness of Ukraine, the weakness of the Ukrainian army. Misinformation about the armed forces of Ukraine led the Russians to believe that things would go as smoothly as they did in 2014. They miscalculated, the Ukrainians turned out to be heroes, determined to fight to the last drop of blood, as we see today, after almost 10 months of this extremely ruthless war in which the Russians not only failed to reach any strategic objective, but the Ukrainians also recaptured the subsequent territories initially occupied by the invaders

What surprised Russia?
According to the PiS leader, the Russians were surprised by Poland’s attitude. What specifically surprised Putin’s regime?
This determination will certainly help. There are many things here that the Russians certainly did not expect. First of all: such an effective diplomatic action by the Polish government, by the Polish state. Polish politicians had already begun to travel the world warning that the Russians were preparing for war
emphasizes Jack.
In some places in Europe and in the world, the belief about Poland’s “Russophobia” is still present, but some politicians – and even those who are not as fond of the Russians as Macron, Merkel or Scholz – could not believe that so a brutal, cruel war. Reality has shown that Polish diplomacy was right and this voice of Poland is increasingly being heard
– rates the PiS MP.
Another thing that surprised the whole world, not just politicians, was the attitude of Poland as a nation, society, families, organizations, local governments, organizing aid unprecedented in the history of civilization for Ukrainians. We have welcomed several million Ukrainians into our homes, regardless of whether someone gives us money for them, takes care of them or guarantees us something. An attitude that still elicits great appreciation from politicians in the West. The vast majority of them are people who have offered the refugees rooms in their private apartments. So the Polish diplomacy, but also the help Poland provided to Ukrainians, were two big surprises
emphasizes the politician.
“Accusing PiS of collaborating with Putin is a heinous act
And how to assess the position of the opposition in this context?
Although part of the opposition was very active on individual aid, the opposition on the political level was not working. The recent events in the Polish Sejm are the best proof. After all, the Polish parliament has in recent days passed a resolution defining Russia as a state that supports global terrorism
– says the head of the parliamentary National Defense Commission.
Many opposition MPs pulled out their cards and did not vote. So de facto they were against this statement of the Polish Sejm. Although it found a majority and passed, it was without the votes of MPs from Platforma Obywatelska, PSL and many other political formations. It’s a shame for them
he adds.
Russia manipulates information, constantly throws some counterfeits and hits Poland and the Polish government. And opposition politicians accept them without checking, which – let’s not be afraid of this word – is shameful
says the MP.
And accusing the Law and Justice government of collaborating with Putin is a heinous act. Whoever makes these kinds of accusations against us – and many Civic Platform politicians often do – proves that they apparently think Poles are idiots
– underlined.
We are accused of “Russophobia” rather than a reliable assessment of Russia’s goals or threats to this state. Therefore, today when we are accused of collaborating with Putin, it is difficult to comment on such pyramidal nonsense. I consider Poland a wise nation that has shown many times, even in recent years, how responsible it is for its future, but also heroic help to those harmed by war
– indicates.
And you don’t have to explain to such people that every cretinism that PO politicians come up with is not true. You can make various allegations against PiS, more or less true or not true at all. However, if someone had told me a year ago that the PO would accuse PiS of collaborating with Putin, I would have replied that he was crazy. And it turns out they can even come up with something so terrible, so silly that no one can imagine they could come up with something like that
– sums up Michal Jach.
