The Russian ambassador in Belgrade reacted to the country’s opposition submitting a draft resolution to the Assembly (Serbia parliament) on joining EU (EC) sanctions against Russia. The statement by the head of the diplomatic department, Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko, was published on the embassy’s Facebook page (its owner, Meta, was considered an extremist and banned in Russia).

The initiator of this project is Borko Stefanovic, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly of Serbia.

“Speaking of the potential damage of Serbia’s conflict with the EU, I wonder why. [Евросоюзными] Do the restrictions, Mr. Stefanovich, sneak up on the problems that will inevitably arise as a result of the severing of relations between Serbia and Russia in vital areas of the economy?” – said the Russian ambassador, noting that Moscow spoke of the consequences without taking into account retaliatory measures.

According to him, we are talking about a boomerang effect for the authors of the sanctions. As an example, he cites the situation in European countries where prices are rising due to sanctions against Russia, energy shortages and “de-industrialisation” are in effect.

He also wondered if the person who initiated the draft resolution was interested in the opinions of the majority of Serbian citizens.

“Judging by the results of the latest opinion polls, his proposal does not fit the mood of more than 80% of Serbian people,” said Botan-Kharchenko.

The head of the Russian diplomatic department also noted that Stefanovich said that the sanctions should be partially implemented.

But Mr. Stefanovich, is it possible to be “a little pregnant”? he finished.

Former Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic statedRepresentatives of the European Parliament in their recommendations stipulate that Belgrade recognizes Kosovo’s independence, as well as impose sanctions on Russia for the possibility of joining the European Union.
