We only remember tourism when it thunders

Using strengths in difficult times should not be interpreted as a flaw. I say this because the news that the tourism sector will again be the one that will save the economic year in the Community, prevent a decline in growth, and there are many, can be interpreted as good or bad. Good because no one can deny that we are still a world power in tourism and it’s like taking another gear when things go wrong. It’s bad because there will be those who see this fact as a dangerous addiction, a lack of diversification that is basically undermining our economy. I think that’s good, so I’m starting this newsletter with this sentence. The experts who attended the V Congress of the Valencian Economy yesterday in Alicante did not comment, but made a sentence with the available data: If we are to maintain 4 percent growth this year, it will be because campaign tourism will be excellent. Without this push, these are BBVA Research data, it would be difficult to reach this figure. It is a symptom that tourism is once again that “deus ex machina” that saves us from misfortune at the last moment like classical theater heroes, but that a large part of our politicians continue to misunderstand this industry and no less. sometimes they see these projects of the new economy, sometimes as an obviously Martian, unattractive sector, as an obstacle to be overcome from the past. The effort to establish a tourism tax in our community, or the central government’s aberrant administration of Imserso, are signs of a misunderstanding that the industry is suffering from some public administration. It’s always worse, luckily, the farther away the phenomenon catches them. Obviously, the municipality of a tourist resort does not play with things to eat.

A good proof of this beautiful campaign is the news that with this word three quarters of our places, including both hotel rooms and tourist apartments, are reserved for July. 25% is still a high figure, but we have to take into account the already common trend towards last-minute bookings. However, it should be borne in mind that the high season, unlike many years ago, begins directly in the second fortnight of September, when there are already reservations, and therefore the season is significantly extended. Compared to 2019, Turespaña calculates 90 to 95% of the average occupancy rate across Spain. In the Costa Blanca it is very likely that this ratio will be even higher.

And one more thing:

It is normal that the Ministry of Education’s intention to cut all staff recruited at the centers next year as a supplement by the pandemic does not lead to much agreement in the education community. On the one hand, the effects of the two very irregular courses are obvious to the students, and then they pretend that the effect does not exist and their support, in which case the staff can serve to mitigate the consequences of a very abnormal situation.. They will continue to need help for a while, more or less, I don’t know. However, by removing subsidies, we will magnify the damage these irregular courses do to their education.
