abortion

Juan García-Gallardo Frings is the vice president of the Junta (government) of Castilla y León. He is there because he is the leader of Vox in the Autonomous Community and runs the country in coalition with the PP. On January 12, he attended a press conference after the Governing Council and, as usual, the media attended to report on what was decided at that official meeting. PP spokesperson Carlos Fernández Carriedo stood by to add more packaging to the look.

I don’t like abortion. Even that word is not pleasant to me. I think it is an opinion shared by the vast majority of men and women. But just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Spain is one of the most developed democracies in the world, according to data released by centers dedicated to analyzing these issues. Therefore, it has adequate legislation in almost every aspect of the life of its citizens. And abortion cannot be an exception. In some cases, the first law approved for the termination of pregnancy belongs to 1985, and the same year, after the Constitutional Court’s decision on the unconstitutionality appeal of the People’s Party, it entered into force. In 2010, a second more ambitious law was passed, regulating sexual health in general and voluntary termination of pregnancy. The People’s Party has once again filed an appeal for unconstitutionality, and today, more than twelve years later, we still have no punishment.

Two laws were passed by socialist parliamentary majorities and two appeals were signed by conservative parliamentarians, which should not surprise us, as this is the case in every part of the world where laws are made on the subject. What is surprising is the delay in constitutional judges in years of conservative majority, which makes us suspect that they did not punish for ideological reasons (this is my opinion) for unconstitutional reasons, but did not want to leave. place for a related party. Now, with a progressive president, I was told this objection would be resolved shortly.

As we go into the analysis of what happened at the ghostly press conference led by Mr. García-Gallardo, the first thing I want to focus on is form. A Board of Directors approves the mandatory provisions published in the Official Gazette. This is taught in the first year of law, so we can doubt that this young person, who graduated from that profession according to his curriculum, studied at a private university. Basically, it’s terrible to see abortion being used as a coach to impose behavior on women all over the US-led world. It is often said that the far right is macho, and abortion is a great example of this. They do not want to defend a person, but to impose their will. If we talk about immigrant children, there is no love, there is xenophobia, they do not defend those souls.

Donald Trump’s legacy will last many years in the United States. The judges he has placed in the Supreme Court will impose their most reactionary theses, especially abortion, today and in the near future. It should not surprise us that this is the first issue they want to mark the change of direction, it is the star of their ideology. In European countries with far-right governments like Poland or Hungary, the road is the same, ban abortion, that’s the first message. In Spain they set out on the same path as soon as they could. Another thing is that although this doesn’t seem very important to them, what they want is to bring this very sensitive subject into discussion.

They know that the effectiveness of a Supreme Court decision in the US is very relative, because many States have their own legislation imposed because competition allows it. In others where the penalty will apply, women who want to terminate their pregnancy will travel several kilometers to places where it is legal to do so. In Poland and Hungary the legislation is more complex as it is state owned and women who want to have an abortion have to travel abroad which is not always easy or cheap. What are they going to do? Well go to the people who practiced them sporadically, what some Spanish women did before the law was passed in 1985. It is clear that the health conditions of abortions performed in public (or state-sponsored) health centers are much better than those of secret abortions. Does this worry Vox and their Polish or Hungarian coreligionists?

I was going to end by writing that I don’t understand what the Leonese vice president of Castile is doing, but I’m afraid I understand that and it’s very good.
