Populism: Between Trump and Putin

In the 1970s, this country was positioned for the great adventure it would have to go through until it consolidated its liberties and joined Europe, while the intellectual leaders of the Transition era had a certain pedagogical enthusiasm that democracy was boring, a regime of liberties is nothing short of epic. The political process is limited to maintaining a creative and peaceful dialectic between the opposing proposals of different parties and advancing according to the dictates of the majority while respecting the minorities. All according to a predetermined rule of law marked by a magna carta representing the unanimity of origin that Rousseau speaks of in his social contract.

It didn’t take long for us to get used to these (for us) new realities that prevail in awe-inspiring Europe farther north, rightly speaking of Alexandre Dumas Jr. It began in the 18th century in the XIX African Pyrenees. But in this new millennium, when we were already integrated with the long-awaited West and bloc politics seemed to be coming to an end to give way to a prosperous future based on emerging globalization, we were unexpectedly faced with another very disturbing and disturbing situation. reality: that of populism, which rejects old traditions, old guidelines, Montesquieu’s reassuring theories, human rights laws, strict criteria for equality of all before the law…

At the forefront of this populism has emerged the delusional and poisonous figure of Trump, who over the past decade despises the secular system he has inherited and is supposedly trying to impose a new arbitrary law, much simpler and fairer than the current one. one to whom he has to practice an arbitrary and brutal heterodoxy that distinguishes himself from ordinary mortals who limit himself to hypocritical obedience to established norms. Slovenian philosopher Alenka Zupančič published the book “Let them rot”. [“Deja que se pudra”]shows that we have more leaders who take pride in their crimes as if they represent some sort of primal, magical, or atavistic value; that is, they pride themselves on having the courage or courage to openly commit crimes that others do not dare to tackle.

Trump decided to impose his arrogance to the point of questioning the election, and not contented with that, he unleashed a Third World coup attempt that led to an embarrassing takeover of Congress during an embarrassing time of death and injury. Trump, who has been harassed in recent weeks not only by his political coup but also by Treasury fraud, has apparently been demanding the “abolition” of the US Constitution, which in its current form does not serve to channel his messianism. .

On the other side of the populist scale, Putin did not hesitate to violate international legality and did so by rejecting evidence: He spent several months saying there was no war in Ukraine, until he finally adopted the defensive version. his frightening prowess in daring to cross certain limits that ordinary people would not dare to cross. But the visionary’s arrogance goes so far that he decided to amend it to avoid imposing historical sanctions: on December 14, the Duma passed a bill identifying the atrocities committed in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson before their annexation. Ukrainian territories “will not be considered a criminal offense punishable by law”, as they are “in the interest of the Russian Federation”.

Our indigenous populism has little to do with these overwhelming excesses, but it is an apprentice for them and it is appropriate to pay attention to the evolution of events. It is deeply disturbing that the leader of the current conservative opposition has confirmed his refusal to abide by constitutional provisions to protect institutions from the malignant greed of the illegitimate government emerging from the polls. The comparisons are disgusting, but it’s good to be on guard so that the global drift of populism gets to us as little as possible.
