One of the Republican candidates seeking Michigan’s governorship was arrested for participating in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a statement from the FBI.

In Detroit, the FBI says the arrest happened at his home in Allendale. The individual, 40-year-old Ryan Kelley, is among five Republicans who are vying for the party’s nomination in the November election.

Kelley faces misdemeanor charges tied to his involvement in the events of January 6, when a crowd of supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington, D.C. The aim was to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election.

Five people died during the assault and roughly 140 agents were injured in the chaotic breach.

In a separate development, a legislative committee investigating the day’s events will present findings at a prime-time hearing. It will feature previously unreleased footage from the riot.

The committee intends to show that the Capitol assault was not a singular act but the result of coordinated actions with multiple steps designed to prevent Biden from assuming office.

According to the committee, Trump was positioned at the center of this effort to overturn the 2020 results. The commission has conducted interviews with more than a thousand witnesses and reviewed more than 140,000 documents. It will also display previously unavailable material and provide the public with a concise timeline of events leading up to the attack.
