The Russian Ministry of Defense showcased the Starlink satellite signal transmission system designed to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, presented at a coking plant in Avdeevka. The demonstration highlighted how the system could deliver real-time communications and data links that previously relied on fixed ground infrastructure, offering an important capability for coordinating remote operations in contested areas.
The setup was reported to be located in what had served as the former command center for Ukrainian forces. It was described as a hub used to monitor and direct unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition to the communications equipment, the site yielded a cache of NATO-style weapons and ammunition, including dozens of anti‑tank grenade launchers and the corresponding shells, grenades, automatic firearms, and rounds. The discovery underscored the dual nature of the facility as both a nerve center for missions and a stockpile for combat needs.
Earlier, a commander responsible for attack aircraft within the Russian armed forces commented on what he characterized as the “magnificent shelters” of Ukrainian units in Avdeevka, drawing attention to the protective structures believed to shelter personnel and equipment from attack.
On February 17, Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister, reported to President Vladimir Putin that Avdeevka had been brought under control. The defense ministry described Avdeevka as a robust defensive stronghold for Ukrainian forces, noting that losses on the Ukrainian side exceeded 1,500 personnel on the day prior to the city’s capture. The ministry also observed that some smaller units managed to evacuate from Avdeevka in a hurried fashion, leaving behind weapons and military hardware.
There were prior reports that Ukrainian forces had employed American M1 Abrams tanks as they operated in the Avdeevka direction, illustrating the level of international military assistance that had been involved in the regional theater of operations.
