A 51-year-old woman found dead in a caravan on a finca near Motril, in Granada, showed signs of violence but was not currently a user of the services offered by the Andalusian Women’s Institute (IAM) to victims of gender-based violence.

Officials confirmed this on Friday when asked by journalists in Huelva, noting that they are awaiting confirmation from the Spanish government on whether this case will be classified as a new instance of violence against women.

Despite that uncertainty, the situation has reignited attention to the scourge of gender violence, which many say remains distressingly prevalent. The viewpoint shared is that the only path to elimination lies in the united effort of society as a whole, with everyone pulling in the same direction to confront the issue.

The regional minister underscored the importance of respecting the ongoing investigation that will determine whether this woman adds to the tally of fatalities attributed to gender violence in Spain. She had visited an aid association for women but did not file any formal report at the time.

María Martín, president of La Volaera in Granada, an organization devoted to helping women, stated that the victim endured abuse from a partner and had never sought to press charges, despite efforts to persuade her to do so. Martín explained that contact with the association occurred about a year earlier through a friend aware of the abuse.

According to Martín, there were moments of clarity when the woman contemplated reporting the abuse, but she consistently chose not to pursue it. The person, who did not work, had been living in a permanently stationed rented caravan on a rural property in Motril for about a year. She was originally from Madrid, where her adult daughter from a prior relationship is said to reside, though she had spent a long period in the Granada area.

Martín added that the victim faced many hardships, and that the association had also suggested moving to a shelter, but she preferred not to leave her dogs behind.

The body was found around 7:30 p.m. yesterday in the caravan, located on a small estate in a hard-to-reach area of the property. At this stage, no arrests have been reported, and police officials could not yet determine whether the case qualifies as violence against women.

The government representative in Granada noted that all investigative avenues remain open and no theory has been discarded as investigators pursue the facts surrounding the circumstances of the death.

Authorities emphasized that the inquiry is ongoing and that additional details would be released as the investigation progresses. There was no immediate identification of the victim in the information released to the press, and the case continues to be monitored by the relevant regional and national bodies.
