Number of new cases reported weekly worldwide decreased by 16.8% in the 39th week – September 26 to October 2 – with 3,046 new cases compared to week 38 – September 19 to September 25, when 3,662 cases were reported. Most of the cases reported in the last 4 weeks were from the Americas Region (85.2%) and the European Region (13.1%).
The 10 most affected countries worldwide: United States (25,672), Brazil (7,869), Spain (7,209), France (3,999), United Kingdom (3,654), Germany (3,631), Peru (2,587), Colombia (2,042), Mexico (1,627) and Canada (1,400). Together, these countries account for 86.5 percent of reported cases globally.
In the last 7 days, 26 countries report weekly increase in cases, biggest increase reported in Nigeria . 38 countries have not reported new cases in the past 21 days. In the past 7 days, only Vietnam has reported its first case.
WHO maintains overall risk as ‘moderate’; At the regional level, it is rated as ‘high’ in the European Region and the Americas Region, while it is rated as ‘moderate’ in the African Region, Eastern Mediterranean Region and Southeast Asia Region. It also notes that the risk in the Western Pacific Region is rated as ‘low-medium’.
The IHR Emergency Committee on the multinational monkeypox epidemic held its second meeting on 21 July 2022. Taking into account the opinions of committee members and advisors, among other factors in line with the International Health Regulations (2005), the WHO Director-General has declared this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and issued interim recommendations regarding the outbreak.
