Sister Alicia Fernández has been a spiritual and vital guide for the family of little Erika Yunga, who was killed in Vallobín on Tuesday. When the little boy’s parents arrived in Spain, they took shelter at the doorstep of María Inmaculada’s sisters, who greeted them in a sheltered apartment and helped them find work. “They’re aligned and they’re ahead.” It was such a union that mother Alba Alvarado started working as a receptionist in a women’s home at least 15 years ago. “She always greets people with a smile,” says Fernández, who has until now been responsible for social work at the center and helping vulnerable women. Soon after, Erika was born, and her sister was named godmother at baptism. A role that the victim fulfills until the last day of his life: “It was her birthday in March. I gave him a book and a little angel.”
Since she was little, Erika participated in almost all activities related to the centre, and as she and her relatives also collaborated in secretarial work, she gave a message of peace and hope to other immigrants who needed a shoulder to lean on.. “They are very calm, hardworking and kind people”, describes Fernandez. And adds in horror: “I don’t understand how it could happen. It’s not a bad thing.”
She was with her parents when she got the shocking news. “He called me from the reception to the office to tell him that they had informed him and that he thought something had happened to Erika.” When they arrived at the address, their fears came true.
