this LIBERA projectHeld the sixth edition of the ‘1m2 for beaches and seas’ citizen campaign organized by the SEO/BirdLife organization in alliance with Ecoembes. This sixth edition of ‘1m2 for beaches and seas’ brings together the participation of collaborating organizations such as the Marine Watchers Network, the NGO Oceanidas or the Spanish Federation of Underwater Activities (FEDAS) divers. In addition to other groups such as the Spanish Red Cross, Man and Territory Association, Matalascañas Dune Park Association, Promemar Association, Terramare Association, ADESP, Alnitak, Mater, Murcia Clean Zone Association or ANSE.

Identify waste

The use of the MARNOBA application, designed by the Zero Discharge Association and KAI Marine Services, will allow volunteers to classify the waste found, as with every release. At the end of the campaign, this data is 670,000 objects registered by LIBERA since 2017 It will be entered in the ‘Garbage Barometer’ and the database of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Spanish Demographic Challenge (MITECO).

In the last campaign, 6.7 tons of litter was recorded off the coast of Spain, with the participation of more than 4,500 volunteers.. Of this amount, 61,483 residues were characterized, and in 2021 the most commonly found objects were butts, beverage cans, straws, cutlery and plastic cups.
