The Moroccan National Hydrocarbon Office (ONHYM) and the British company Chariot signed an agreement to allow it. Transporting gas over the Maghreb from a well on the Larache coastEurope (GME), It served to channel Algerian gas to Spain through Moroccan territory until Algeria shut it down.
The British company announced this agreement by making a statement. “It will allow the transport of gas produced by the Anchois gas project (name of the well) off the coast of Morocco. to different potential buyers through the GME”.
Pierre Raillard, Chariot’s director in Morocco, stated that the project values this agreement. Anchois is “a highly strategic asset, given the continuing volatility of the international energy market.”
“Combined with the proximity of the GME pipeline, we are in a good position to channel the gas as quickly as possible,” the note adds.
Chariot announced the discovery of this well in Januaryis located in the area named Anchois-2 where the first gas bag (Anchois-1) has already been exploited. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 38 kilometers from the city of Larache and 87 kilometers from Kenitra (north of Rabat).
“A preliminary interpretation of the data confirms the presence of significant gas accumulations in the evaluation and exploration targets of the well, with a total net gas payout of more than 100 meters compared to the 55 meters of the original Anchois-1 well.” said at the time.
The agreement with the Moroccan public company will allow this gas to reach the GME, which comes from Algeria and extends to the northern city of Tangier, where it passes from the far north east of Morocco to Spain.
Algeria decided not to extend the contract of this gas pipeline in November 2021.and therefore, within the framework of the rupture of relations between Algeria and Rabat.
Now transporting an average of 10,000 million cubic meters to the Iberian Peninsula, GME is used only in the reverse direction from Spain to Morocco, thus providing Madrid, Rabat with regasified gas at Spanish factories.
