Huari civilization, 6-10 AD. centuries in Peru. Their state preceded that of the Incas, and its capital was located near modern Ayacucho. At its peak, 40 thousand people lived in this city, and its buildings were distinguished by an unusual appearance. The dwellings were built in the shape of a rectangle with courtyards, and the temples were in the shape of the letter D. In 2010, archaeologists discovered a mausoleum filled with buried people and grave goods on the site of the El Castillo de Huarmey monument to the Uarian elite. It was possible to find three buried kings.

Now Milos Gersh and his colleagues have discovered a “gallery of fine artisans” at this mausoleum. In total, it was possible to examine the bodies of seven people – four adults and three teenagers. Besides the dead, there were hundreds of tools and materials they used in life, such as axes, saws, knives, and raw materials for making baskets. Next to the remains were items made from various materials, including wood and cloth. According to the researchers, the finds confirm that the El Castillo de Huarmey monument was not only a royal tomb and sacred site associated with the cult of ancestors, but also an important administrative and craft center of Huari.

Especially the rich grave goods of the tomb are remarkable. According to scientists, this indicates that those buried were skilled artisans who were part of society’s elite.
