A group of psychologists from the University of Silesia in Poland and Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University and the University of Padua in Italy discovered that men are happier in relationships when they find their jokes funnier than their own jokes. They talked about it in a magazine article. Personality and Individual Differences.

Researchers interviewed 149 heterosexual couples with an average relationship duration of about seven years. Volunteers reported how often they joked with their spouses, how often their spouses joked, and how often they found their jokes funny.

Although there was no gender difference in how often they laughed at a partner’s jokes, it turned out that men joked more often and rated their own jokes as more successful. Male humor was more associated with aggression and self-affirmation.

Men also felt happier in relationships where their partners rated their jokes as funnier than theirs.

“Jokes, laughter, and humor are still part of the mechanisms involved in building relationships between partners in long-term relationships,” the researchers said.
