George Miller’s new movie most likely not what his fans expected of him. And not just because it separated him nearly three thousand kilometers from the defenders of his career, the members of the ‘Mad Max’ saga; furthermore, this fantasy, reminiscent of “One Thousand and One Nights”, although it shows a taste for stories and fables similar to that shown by the Australian master in titles such as “The Witches of Eastwick” (1987) or “Baby, little pig”. in the city’ (1998), Her epic and romantic aspirations are crushed by the weight of her philosophical pretensions.emotional, thematic and conceptual.
The movie is essentially a portrait of two characters talking in one room for most of the footage. Tilda Swinton plays a doctor of literature who comes to Istanbul; Idris Elba, the genie of the lamp that suddenly appeared before him. and the one who decided to reveal his long biography spanning millennia, dynasties and continents. Their conversation, then, is periodically interrupted by successive ‘flips’ of tales of deceived sultans, enraged princes, and subjugated concubines; Miller returns to the Istanbul suite after each, giving the film a distinctly episodic and repetitive structure. By the way, it is true that Miller demonstrates his inexhaustible imagination and often pleasing taste for the eccentric. But it uses a type for that. extreme aestheticism and ‘kitsch’ evoking perfume adsPlayStation video games and Tarsem Singh movies.
Both with the vignette collection and what happened after the couple finally left the room, Miller tries to tell us the immense value the stories we tell each other have for people, how necessary our desires are, and the dangers involved. , How our reliance on technology and science has cut us off from what makes us truly human, growing hatred in times of Brexit and above all love. We say that’s the idea. But the teacher and the genius talk and talk without saying anything really important; and while giving them speakers, the film forgets that the protagonists of a love story must be thinking and feeling beings who are complete and complementary, not just concept containers. The best way to respect the art of storytelling is to tell a good story, not endlessly chatter about how important it is.. It’s a shame that the ‘three thousand years waiting for you’ is not an example.
