Sleeping people’s eyes rotate in a dream, following the direction of the virtual gaze. Article about it published in science.

REM sleep is characterized by increased brain activity and constant eye movement, hence its name. It is believed that in this case a person is dreaming.

With the help of experiments on mice, American scientists from the University of California at San Francisco decided to check how eye movement in a dream is related to the direction of mental gaze. To do this, they placed electrodes in the mice that monitored the state of their head direction neurons. By analyzing the state of these neurons, it can be understood where the animal’s gaze is directed.

As a result, it turned out that the direction of gaze completely coincided with the rotation of the eyeballs in sleep, according to the analysis of the neurons. Moreover, these data coincided with the time when the animals were awake.

Researchers conclude that sleep and wakefulness are coordinated by the same parts of the brain, supporting the theory that dreaming helps integrate the knowledge of the day.
