Vitamin and trace element deficiencies can affect anyone, and they do not vanish with the changing seasons. A leading endocrinologist from the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center, part of the National Research Medical University of Russia, recently highlighted this reality. The health ministry spokesperson noted that nutrient gaps are a concern across age groups and health statuses, a point reported by Izvestia.

According to the physician, vitamin shortfalls are not seasonal. Individuals over 65, newborns, patients recovering from surgery, those with digestive disorders, and people with a history of alcohol use are particularly at risk for deficiencies that can influence energy, immunity, and overall well-being.

The expert underscored that a well-balanced diet can supply all the nutrients the body needs. To help prevent gaps, the advice includes eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily, two to three servings of dairy or fermented dairy products, two to three protein-rich foods such as fish, meat, eggs, or legumes, and three to four servings of whole grains like pasta, cereals, or grain bread.

There is a growing belief that modern foods lack sufficient vitamins, a claim not fully supported by the latest scientific findings. While supplements can be beneficial in certain circumstances, taking them without medical guidance may do more harm than good, and unnecessary supplementation is not advised.

To reduce the risk of deficiency, it pays to focus on dietary variety, mindful preparation, and consistent meal timing. Real foods, chosen with attention to balance and portion size, remain the foundation of good nutrition for adults and seniors alike. When health conditions or life stages change, a healthcare professional can offer personalized guidance to ensure nutritional needs are met without overreliance on pills or powders.
