Architects from the University of Sheffield found that maximizing the amount of natural light in a home increases happiness, while materials like red brick reduce it. Article published in the journal Building and Environment.

While it is known that home furnishings affect people’s moods, little was known until now about the specific aspects that affect emotions. Researchers decided to find out how natural light in the home affects mood. They showed 750 attendees 25 living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom designs with different natural light designs. The rooms had different numbers and different sizes of windows facing north or south. Participants were asked to rate how happy or sad they felt when they looked at each room.

It turns out that people are happiest when they look at rooms where 40% of the walls have windows. Wall covering materials also played a role. Plaster and wooden wall decoration had a positive effect on emotions, while brickwork had a negative effect. This may be because different materials reflect and absorb light differently.

Although scientists haven’t looked into the cause of the results, previous studies have shown that exposure to light can increase levels of the “happiness hormone” serotonin. Light therapy is recommended for people with seasonal affective disorder. Now that we live, work and spend more time at home than ever before, the authors of the article believe that city planners and developers should consider improving indoor natural light conditions.
