The modern anti-alcohol policy in Russia is much more effective than that implemented in the USSR in the mid-1980s. This was told to socialbites.ca by a psychiatrist-narcologist, professor of RUDN University Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic Pathology, Doctor of Medical Sciences Yuri Sivolap.

“As for the anti-alcohol campaign of the Gorbachev era, these were of course very rude, illogical, thoughtless acts. Cut the elite vineyards. It really didn’t lead to anything. But in principle limiting access to alcohol pays off. If it is difficult to buy alcohol in our country, it is impossible at night, impossible until the age of 21, there will be a limited number of trading places where you can do this, and such measures will be constantly introduced – of course, people drink less, ”he explained.

Sivolap noted that the most successful in this matter was Finland – high prices for strong alcohol and restrictions on its sale made it possible to minimize cases of delirium tremens. In addition, the world is now experiencing a decline in alcohol consumption in general, and Russia supports this trend.

“People have started to drink less in our country, I also evaluate it according to my customer base. People stopped drinking during negotiations because they realized that nothing good would come of them, that normal decisions at the table cannot be made while drunk. In law enforcement they began to drink much less – and before they drank black. The pandemic has of course mixed the cards a bit. During the pandemic, the whole world began to drink more, because the pandemic was accompanied by high levels of stress, various psycho-traumatic factors – job destruction, isolation, etc. But in any case, the positive trend continues,” the doctor added.
