It is possible to cope with alcohol addiction without the help of doctors, but in practice such cases are rare – treatment often requires support and control from specialists. This was told to socialbites.ca by a psychiatrist-narcologist, professor of RUDN University Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic Pathology, Doctor of Medical Sciences Yuri Sivolap.

“If a person makes a decision, sometimes there are cases of recovery. “They happen less often than we would like, but they do happen,” he said.

In the case of insufficient motivation, even doctors cannot always help – after completing the treatment, the patient can return to the previous lifestyle.

“It is important for a person to be ready, to seek help. But this happens when a person is either not motivated enough – he leaves the clinic and immediately starts drinking, or he has a very strong addiction – he wants to quit, but it does not work, ”Sivolap explained.

“The most effective treatment will be when it combines medication, psychotherapy, and support from loved ones.”
