Researchers at Tel Aviv University have developed a method to detect early signs of dementia by measuring brain activity while listening to music. Article published in the journal Frontiers in the Neuroscience of Aging.

Scientists have developed a music test to measure cognitive decline. Within 12-15 minutes, the patient performs various tasks in which the electrical activity of the brain is recorded using a portable EEG device. The patient is connected to the EEG device using adhesive tape with three forehead electrodes. Meanwhile, short melodies and instructions for completing tasks are played on the patient’s headphones. For example, you have to press a button every time a melody is played or a violin is playing. Before performing the test, the patient should meditate for a few minutes with music to bring the brain to rest.

The experiment involved testing 50 elderly people. EEG results were analyzed using machine learning technology. This made it possible to identify EEG measurements that correlated accurately with the results of classical cognitive tests.

The new method will enable routine screening for early detection of cognitive decline to ensure early treatment and prevent rapid and severe deterioration.
