A nuclear war causes global famine and kills billions
A nuclear war between the United States and Russia would cause a global famine that could kill more than 5,000 million people, according to a study published today in the scientific journal “Nature Food.”
Climatologists from the American Rutgers University analyzed how soot thrown into the atmosphere by fires from an atomic collision would affect global agricultural production.
Researcher Lili Xia and her group studied six possible scenarios: five of them correspond to nuclear wars between India and Pakistan, and the sixth is a major conflict between Russia and the United States. The scientists did their calculations “according to the size of each country’s nuclear arsenal,” their university said in a statement.
By connecting their forecasts to a climate model, the experts calculated the impact of maize, rice, wheat and soybeans on crop production, as well as changes in grasslands and global fish stocks.
