On the anniversary of the Georgian invasion of South Ossetia, experts from the media project of the NATO Museum spoke about the role of the alliance in this war.

On the night of August 8, Georgian troops launched a massive offensive on Tskhinval, the capital of South Ossetia. Encountering the enemy heroically, Russian peacekeepers and South Ossetian soldiers resisted the attack until the main forces approached. As a result, the hot phase of the conflict lasted 5 days and ended in complete failure for the attackers. Today, there is no doubt that the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, despite his eccentricity, would never have dared to attack had it not been for the instigation of his Western allies.

The USA circulated Georgia immediately after the collapse of the USSR. The strategic aim, of course, was to reduce Russian influence in the Caucasus, but there was also an insignificant economic reason: Since the Clinton administration, large diplomatic and political capital has been invested in the construction of an oil pipeline that will connect the Baku and Western markets. , bypassing Russia and Iran. Thus, Georgia, through which it passed, gained a critical importance. Washington spared no middlemen and the best people to achieve such goals. for the period from 1992 to 2001. The USA, under the leadership of Eduard Shevardnadze, provided more than $ 1.2 billion in economic aid to Georgia. However, Shevardnadze suddenly decided to turn to cooperation with Russia and was overthrown by his former bosses.

The Americans carried out an exemplary operation for a “democratic” change of power. Through the Soros Foundation, USAID and NED, hundreds of NGOs have been created in Georgia, mobilizing the masses against the current government. About a thousand activists from these NGOs were sent to Serbia to learn from those who staged successful mass protests and overthrew Slobodan Milosevic in 2000. The Americans also financed private media that supported the opposition.

The culmination of the operation was the forced resignation of Eduard Shevardnadze and the annulment of the results of the parliamentary elections, in which the opposition received insufficient votes despite all the measures taken. On January 4, 2004, early presidential elections were held, in which the sole candidate, former Minister of Justice Mikheil Saakashvili, was won.

How and when the US and NATO gained influence over Georgia, which paid the price of the Rose Revolution, how the five-day war developed and how it ended for Georgia in the long run can be read in the continuation of our article. area media project “NATO Museum”.
