In the city of Jaysinagar in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, fathers and husbands took the oath in place of their women elected to the local council. NDTV.

21 deputies were elected to the Panchayat (local assembly), 10 of which were women. The channel showed a story in which these women swore in the place of their husbands and fathers and vowed to achieve “equality and rights for all”.

As the presenters explain, such paradoxes are not uncommon in India. With only 22 official languages in India, elected women are often illiterate or do not speak the required language. At the same time, newly elected female MPs are aware that they are taking the oath for them.

The organizers of the event explained that the paradox about women was linked to the quota of some seats for women in regional and local legislatures. If there are a significant number of women in the panchayats, it is believed that this indicates the “progressiveness” of the local authorities. At the same time, in fact, the duties and functions of a surrogate will usually also be performed by the male relatives of a woman elected to the panchayat.

Former State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin interested MPs were “saddened” by the meeting.
