US President Joe Biden thanked the US Senate for adopting a resolution ratifying Finland and Sweden’s accession protocols to NATO and said he “waits” to sign the document. His words were quoted by the press service of the White House.
“I look forward to signing the accession protocols and invite Sweden and Finland, two powerful democracies with extremely capable military forces, to join the ranks of the largest defense alliance in history,” the American president said.
Describing the vote on the document as “historic”, he stressed that this decision “sends an important signal” about the United States’ commitment to the North Atlantic alliance. Biden also noted that this was the “fastest” process to ratify the NATO protocol in the Senate since 1981.
“The participation of Finland and Sweden in the North Atlantic Alliance will strengthen NATO’s collective security and deepen its transatlantic partnership,” the American leader said.
To accept a document voted down More than two-thirds of U.S. Senators.
At the summit on 29 June, NATO leaders formally invited Sweden and Finland to join the alliance. On 5 July, the Finnish and Swedish Foreign Ministers signed protocols on NATO accession.
