Nutritional shakes may reduce the risk of post-operative complications

Providing patients with therapeutic nutrition before surgery can reduce hospital stay by 18% and the risk of postoperative complications by 33%. This was demonstrated by a study presented at the congress. American College of Surgeons ACS.

Scientists analyzed data from 4,078 patients who had surgery at one of eight sites. Providing a patient with a nutritional cocktail containing omega-3 fatty acids and arginine reduced the risk of complications by 33% and length of hospital stay by 18%. Collectively, patients’ hospital stays decreased by 2,699 days. Scientists stated that annual savings could reach $7.8 million.

Complementary feeding programs have been used mainly for cancer patients, but they need to be expanded, the study authors say.
