European Union leaders decided to increase immigration controls on the borders of Russia and Belarus. This is also reflected in the summit’s final statement on migration issues. TASS.
The document emphasizes that neither Russia, Belarus nor any other state can use European values, including the right to asylum, in a way that undermines democratic principles. The authors of the document noted that special measures are necessary in exceptional cases and that the European Council is determined to take all steps to effectively control external borders.
It is also stated that the European Union is ready to provide practical assistance to Russia and the states neighboring Belarus in order to “stop their political instrumentalization” in the fight against migration flows. Questions regarding specific actions to strengthen control in the future will be resolved at the EU Council level.
