Richard Pawulski, 49, a Polish American, died on October 15 after five years of battling the effects of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEN). The disease, transmitted through mosquito bites, struck Pawulski in 2019 while he was cleaning his backyard. The day after the mosquito bite, the man began to experience headaches, nausea, and vomiting, so he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with cerebral edema and subsequently underwent surgery, but Pavulski fell into a coma.
VEV is a rare virus that affects the central nervous system. After entering the body, headache, fever, disorientation and convulsions occur. There is no specific treatment and the mortality rate in patients reaches 33%. The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, but horses are believed to be the main carriers.
Pawulski woke up after being in a coma for two months, but the effects of the virus caused serious damage to his brain, kidneys and liver. For the next five years, he was in and out of hospitals and nursing homes due to confusion and complications. His condition worsened last week due to untreatable bacterial and staphylococcal infections that led to organ failure.
There were 10 new cases of VEL in the United States in 2024, and three of them, including Pawulski, died from complications.
