Scientists from the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) found that good nutrition and physical activity in childhood have a profound effect on metabolism and cardiovascular health, even years after lifestyle changes. Research results It was published In the journal iScience.

The study involved volunteers who adhered to the principles of a healthy lifestyle (HLS) during childhood and adolescence. Scientists collected blood samples from the subjects for laboratory analysis. The researchers focused on investigating changes in the molecular mechanisms underlying the positive effects of proper nutrition and exercise on physical health.

By analyzing blood samples, researchers were able to detect changes in 80 metabolites (metabolic intermediates in living cells) in volunteers who had previously followed a healthy lifestyle. These changes were associated with a reduced risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases (diabetes, obesity, heart attack, atherosclerosis), improved digestion and fat metabolism in the body, and reduced levels of inflammation.

Some of the most notable changes occurred in fatty amides, molecules involved in weight control, eating behavior, sleep induction, pain, anxiety and arterial regulation, the scientists noted.

The researchers highlighted that 17 of the 80 metabolites remained unchanged even eight years after the lifestyle change, but the most significant benefits to the body continued in the first two years.
