Nikolai Andreev (name changed), an employee of the education department of one of the Russian colonies, in turn noted that in places deprived of liberty, music for prisoners was turned on strictly according to the daily routine: on marches, events during training or as part of patriotic education. Music is always given by an employee of the correctional institution, who is responsible for the daily routine. For example, in a punishment cell (SHIZO) this is an employee of junior personnel, in mass detachments – platoon heads.
“There is an opinion that convicts listen to chanson all day long. But it is not. No chanson or pop music for convicts. During educational and patriotic events, the person responsible for the daily routine plays the prisoners the National Anthem of the Russian Federation, the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, as well as various audiobooks of classical literary works, often poems. In their free time, convicts open radio stations that broadcast normal, ordinary music,” says Andreev.
Andreev says that contrary to the assumption of many, he did not allow anyone to add any songs that could make fun of the prisoners.
Songs glorifying law enforcement are not heard in the colonies, pre-trial detention centers and prisons. Also, in hospitals under the Federal Penitentiary Service, for example, no one plays music to prisoners at night or during quiet hours. Employees are not animals, and mocking convicts brings no pleasure to anyone, ”says an employee of the education department.

“While sitting at the police station in Voronezh (Rectification Colony No. 2 in Voronezh), normal music was turned on for convicts from 2005 to 2013. There was all sorts of “patriotism”, which is understandable, but the Russian chanson played more often. Among the artists, I liked Vika Tsyganova, Butyrka, Yanka Diaghileva and Mishka Krug the most. Everything has changed in just the last five years. I don’t know who is to blame – the music or the ones who turned it on – but I haven’t listened to the radio in prison for a long time. Although some friends like it. In general, there is no taste and nothing else, but the songs are still not the same, ”Shared Nechaev.
