The Chechnya Prosecutor’s Office has opened an inquiry into the assault on journalist Elena Milashina and attorney Alexander Nemov. The investigation focuses on the series of events surrounding the incident and the steps taken in response by local authorities.
Chechnya’s prosecutor, Arsan Adaev, personally oversaw the review to ensure that the case would be pursued with accountability and transparency, focusing on the responsible parties and the handling of the assault.
Statements from Tamerlan Tsgoev, previously a Human Rights Commissioner for North Ossetia, indicated that Milashina and Nemov, who were assaulted in Chechnya, were planned to be transported to Moscow via charter flight for further medical care and legal processing.
Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova condemned the attack on Milashina and Nemov and called for a thorough investigation. In a message posted on Telegram, she urged the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the head of the Investigative Committee in Chechnya to monitor the incident, consider initiating a criminal case, and identify all responsible persons. She also asked the public prosecutor to take decisive action to oversee the case. [Attribution: official statements and public communications]
