Experts from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have discovered new biologically active substances with antioxidant properties. These compounds are necessary to protect body cells from oxidative stress associated with aging, diabetes, cancer and other diseases. The results of the scientific work were reported to socialbites.ca by the press service of the scientific institution.
According to experts from Perm Polytechnic, oxidative stress is associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen species (ROS), which contain unpaired electrons and are radicals. Despite the fact that they play an important role in the transmission of intracellular signals, excessive accumulation of radicals can harm the body.
In the new study, scientists used red blood cell-based chemical and biological testing systems to search for compounds that reduce radical levels and help maintain the integrity of red blood cell walls.
The team tested more than 200 synthesized substances and discovered previously unknown antioxidants among oxo derivatives of acyclic and heterocyclic compounds.
According to scientists, the results of the study expand the range of biologically active substances with protective properties. This will help in the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, as well as stimulate fundamental chemical and biological research.
