People with a family history of autoimmune disease have an 8 to 15 times higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes. New evidence suggests that the risk of developing type 1 diabetes is higher if the father has type 1 diabetes. Having a mother with type 1 diabetes protects the child from the disease to some extent, PCR.News reports.

Scientists analyzed data from five studies involving 11,000 patients with type 1 diabetes. They were diagnosed at ages ranging from 0 to 88. Their fathers were 1.8 times more likely to have diabetes than their mothers.

The mother’s diabetes “protected” the child only if the woman was already ill during pregnancy. The mechanism of this protection is still unknown. High glucose levels, insulin therapy or maternal antibodies may play a role. If scientists can find a protective factor, it could form the basis of treatment to slow the onset of diabetes.

The authors also took into account the effects of more than 60 genes associated with the risk of developing diabetes, but the genetic risk was about the same in people whose mothers or fathers were affected.
