Ecuador’s Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Freedom (SNAI) reported this Monday: At least 13 prisoners killed, two injured Ecuadorian Bellavista prison in the town of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.
Learning of the fight in Santo Domingo prison, SNAI stated on its Twitter account that they requested “immediate support from the National Police, Armed Forces and Ministry of Public Health”. At 17:54 (local time), SNAI stated that control of this prison center has already been re-established with the support of security forces. SNAI said, “The institutions responsible for internal and external security continue to monitor the center. Verification of the deceased will be done by the Prosecutor’s Office, which is the authorized body for the verification of victims.”
government Guillermo Lasso pledges to reform the prison system in May, marked by events that have claimed dozens of lives over and over again. As many as 300 inmates could die in the last year alone, and for this the Executive has proposed a number of initiatives, including prison census.
