SM-Clinic gastroenterologist Evgenia Zarubina in an interview with socialbites.ca warned that excessively hot foods, including high-temperature drinks, should not be consumed, as this can lead to various pathological changes in the gastrointestinal tract.
He noted that first of all the oral cavity suffers. Taste and thermoreceptors are located in the papillae of the tongue.
“If the food is too hot, you no longer feel the taste of food, because these signals are suppressed by signals from thermoreceptors. Constant thermal irritation of the tongue receptors can lead to a decrease in their sensitivity. In addition, when the temperature of the consumed food is high, epithelial cells die, and this is fraught with the development of burns of the esophagus and stomach,” the doctor warns.
According to him, at best, this can cause discomfort when swallowing, pain in the esophagus and stomach. And at worst, with prolonged treatment and recovery, it can cause cicatricial changes in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Also, too hot food can cause exacerbation of chronic diseases of the esophagus and stomach.
“The optimal temperature of food for the body is 40-42 degrees. This is slightly higher than the temperature of the internal organs, where the enzyme system works best,” added the gastroenterologist.
