Scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Reichmann University found that adults with the same name have similar facial features, but this is not the case in children. Research results published In Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The researchers conducted a series of experiments with volunteers. In a two-part experiment involving 556 people (adults and children aged 8-12), the scientists asked the test participants to guess people’s names based on their photos. It was noted that the images included both children’s and adults’ faces. You had to choose a name from a list.

The study found that participants in both age groups were generally successful at correctly matching adults’ names to their photos. The number of correct answers statistically exceeded the number of random “guesses.” However, far fewer correct answers were given when trying to identify children’s names.

Scientists interpreted the findings as confirmation of their theory of “self-fulfilling prophecy,” which states that a person’s facial features change over time and become similar to those of other people with the same name.

In the third phase of the new scientific study, scientists turned to artificial intelligence. Using a machine learning system, they analyzed a large dataset of people’s faces and names. As a result, it turned out that people with the same name have more similar features than those with different names. As in the previous series of experiments, this effect was observed only in adults, but not in children.
