The Appian Way in Italy, built by the ancient Romans, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to the report, this event makes Italy the leader in the number of objects on this prestigious list Guard.
Known as Regina Viarum, or Queen of the Roads, it connected Rome to the southern port of Brindisi and became a symbol of a revolution in road construction. The first section of the road was planned by the Roman statesman Appius Claudius Caecus in 312 BC and was initially used as a strategic route for military purposes. Until this time, the only route outside of Ancient Rome was the Etruscan roads leading to Etruria, a region in central Italy.
Today, the first 17 kilometers of this paved road are protected and preserved by the Appia Antica archaeological park south of Rome. This beautifully preserved road attracts many history buffs, walkers and cyclists, and its surroundings are dotted with the ruins of ancient Roman aqueducts and villas.
