A study by scientists from the University of Virginia shows that the loss of the male sex chromosome with age leads to premature death. researchers’ work published in the journal Science.
The discovery will help explain why men die, on average, several years younger than women.
Researchers estimate that 40% of men over the age of 60 suffer from loss of the Y chromosome, which causes scarring of the heart muscle and can lead to heart failure and death. And smokers lose a chromosome much more often.
Loss occurs predominantly in cells that undergo rapid transformation, such as blood cells. However, there is no loss of Y chromosome in male reproductive cells.
The scientists used CRISPR gene editing technology to develop a custom mouse model in which the Y chromosome was removed from male rodents. After that, scientists found that loss accelerated age-related diseases, leading to scarring on the heart and, as a result, earlier death.
