Most often, pregnancy is not a contraindication to sexual activity. However, after giving birth, several weeks of sexual abstinence are mandatory, otherwise injuries and infections can occur. This was told to socialbites.ca by Alina Stepanova, a gynecologist at the DocMed IVF clinic.

“While sexual activity is safe for most pregnant women, there are complications that can pose risks. For example, if a woman is at risk of premature labor, placenta previa, shortening of the cervix (isthmic-cervical insufficiency) or premature rupture of amniotic fluid, a doctor may recommend abstinence,” Stepanova said.

Abstinence is also necessary after birth. The birth canal, vaginal muscles and tissues, episiotomy and stitches after tears need to be repaired.

“Postpartum discharge (lochia) can persist for several weeks, increasing the risk of infection during sexual activity. Breastfeeding can also cause vaginal dryness,” the doctor explained.
