Scientists from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine found that certain measurements of body roundness index (BRI), which include height, waist circumference and hip circumference, may indicate heart disease and muscle atrophy. Research results published On JAMA Network Open.

Measuring weight helps doctors determine who is most at risk for obesity-related deaths. However, recent research has shown that traditional measures of body fat, such as body mass index (BMI), may not provide sufficient data to assess fat distribution.

To fill this knowledge gap, scientists have proposed assessing health using the body roundness index (BRI). Height is calculated based on waist circumference and hip circumference.

In a study of 32,995 people, researchers found that people with low BRI (tall height, small waist and hips) had a 25% increased risk of death from all causes. The researchers emphasized that a very low BRI may be characterized by malnutrition, fatigue, reduced exercise capacity and muscle atrophy.

However, high BRI (large waist and hip circumference combined with short stature) was significantly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders and cancer.

Children who were previously underweight It turned out to be He is smarter than his overweight peers.
