Medications that contain sodium (such as heartburn medications) may interact with blood pressure pills. Doctor Elena Malysheva talked about this in the program “Health”.

Malysheva noted that people with hypertension are advised to limit salt intake. This is because sodium, the main component of salt, retains fluid in the body and causes the vessel wall to swell. This increases blood pressure.

But sodium includes not only salt but also some medications. For example, antacids are medications used against heartburn. Moreover, the sodium concentration in them is often very high. The doctor recommended paying attention to the composition of the drugs: they can increase blood pressure if they contain sodium bicarbonate or sodium alginate.

Some people use baking soda to combat heartburn. It also contains large amounts of sodium.

“If you eat a spoonful of baking soda, you will immediately exceed your daily sodium limit. Of course, the pressure will increase,” Malysheva explained.
