State company Rosatom is ready to build a second nuclear power plant in Belarus if necessary. The company’s general director, Alexey Likhachev, told reporters in Minsk. TASS.

According to him, the only question is what the technical outlook and location of the future block will be.

At the end of April, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko statedthat the country’s leadership is considering building a second nuclear power plant in the republic.

“Probably our society has suffered from the post-Chernobyl syndrome… We are still thinking… We would really like to build a second station,” the Belarusian leader said.

Belarus already has one nuclear power plant, located on the country’s northwestern border, between the agricultural towns of Vornyany, Gervyaty and Mikhalishki. The launch of the station’s first block took place in August 2020.

In March, within the framework of the international forum “Atomexpo-2024”, Rosatom and the Belarusian Academy of Sciences signed scientific and technical cooperation agreement. Under the agreement, participants will jointly solve problems in the field of advanced scientific research.
