Ear, nose and throat surgeons at Zhukovsky performed surgery to close a defect in the skull of a man with cerebrospinal fluid leaking from his nose. This was reported by Ministry of Health of Moscow Region.

A 35-year-old man appealed to the doctors of the Zhukovsk hospital. The clear nasal discharge turned out to be cerebrospinal fluid, which is the cerebrospinal fluid flowing from the brain.

A few months before going to the doctor, the man suffered a traumatic brain injury from a fall from a height of 20 feet. The cerebrospinal fluid leak threatened the patient with infection in the brain and spinal cord and the development of meningitis.

Doctors discovered a defect in the base of the skull and the dura mater. Otolaryngologists performed plastic surgery of the base and meninges through the nasal cavity.

“To close the defect, fatty tissue and fascia, the connective tissue membrane of the patient’s femur muscle, were used,” said otolaryngologist Avetis Martirosov.

After the surgery, the man was in good health and was discharged for outpatient treatment.
