Zoo workers in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, had to ban lions from mating to avoid unnecessary stress due to the record heat in April. This was reported by portal Phys.org, with reference to data from the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.
In recent days, thermometers in the metropolis have reached 37 °C.
The zoo staff’s top priority was preventing heatstroke in big cats, according to Dave Vinas, the zoo’s head of veterinary services. The facility team sprays water on the walls and floors of the concrete enclosures throughout the day to cool the structures.
Lions and tigers are also given “frozen candies” made from frozen ground meat or chicken, animal blood and vitamins. The big cats themselves are also watered regularly and allowed to bathe in pools inside the pens.
Manila Zoo employees said they were prepared for the arrival of spring heat, but this year temperatures were the highest in their memory, so employees had to find new ways to make life easier for their responsibilities.
