Scientists from the City University of Hong Kong found that probiotics found in yoghurt, cheese and sauerkraut stabilize blood pressure. The results of their research shared In the journal mSystems.
Fermented and fermented dairy products such as sauerkraut, cheese and yogurt contain probiotics. These are microorganisms that can restore the normal microflora of organs and at the same time have a detrimental effect on pathogenic bacteria. Probiotics normally replenish and benefit the human microflora.
To test whether probiotics are effective in treating hypertension, researchers conducted a 16-week experiment on mice. Rodents were divided into four groups. Mice in the first group drank water high in fructose (sugar) to increase blood pressure. Mice in the second group were given probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis and sweetened water. The third group consumed water and another probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The fourth group served as the control group.
Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were significantly higher in mice that drank fructose water at the beginning of the experiment. SBP is the top number on the blood pressure monitor screen and reflects the amount of pressure in the arteries during the heartbeat. DBP is a lower number that expresses the amount of pressure in the arteries during the pause between heartbeats.
The results of the experiment showed that SBP decreased by approximately 15-17% and DBP decreased by 18.5-20% in mice treated with probiotics. Scientists noted that Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus rhamnosus are found in foods such as milk, cheese, tofu, sauerkraut and kimchi. Eating these types of foods, combined with reducing the amount of salt in the diet and regular exercise, can be an effective method of lowering blood pressure without medication.
