Residents of the town of Grindavik were evacuated after the volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. TV channel reports this CNN.

“The lava appeared to be flowing rapidly north of the town of Grindavik,” the report said. The TV channel also noted that the lava was flowing in the direction of the Grindavikurvegur highway leading to Grindavik.

It was noted that the main international airport Keflavik and other regional airports continue to operate normally. However, volcanic gas is expected to reach the city’s airport on Sunday, March 17.

Geophysicist Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson said after flying over the site by helicopter that the current eruption was the strongest of seismic activity in recent years.

Gudmundsson emphasized that the active fault extends from the northern side of Hagafell and north to Stora Skogfell. He estimates its width to be about 3.5 kilometers.
