Scientists from the National University of Natural Medicine in the US found that black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, chopped onion and garlic, and turmeric can improve gut health due to their high content of polyphenols, which are special plant compounds. Research results published In the nutrition magazine.

During the study, scientists analyzed the health indicators and eating habits of 96 adults. Volunteers were asked to report which spices they usually use and how often they use them when preparing and garnishing dishes. The scientists also collected stool samples from the participants to assess microbial diversity in the gut.

It was revealed that the increased consumption frequency of black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, freeze-dried onion and garlic, and turmeric contributed to an increase in the population of Lactobacillus and Sutterella bacteria in the intestines. The numbers of Eubacterium ventriosum, Ruminococcus Torques, Bacteroides and Enterococcus decreased. Scientists explained that such changes in the intestinal microbiome are associated with improved organ functions.

According to researchers, the benefits of herbs and spices for the gut come from the fact that they are rich in polyphenols, special plant compounds that serve as nutrients for beneficial bacteria.
